First on the list is a little time to himself to recharge his batteries. As we went to press, "Baby" Joe was in the middle of a well-deserved vacation in Las Vegas. His father, Jack Mesi said, "He’s been called upon for so many different things his phone never stops ringing. So I’ve got to get him out of town."
Team Mesi is currently waiting for the new rankings for be released. Jack Mesi commented that once the rankings are made known, Team Mesi would begin their quest to find their next opponent.
Outside the ring Joe is still very much involved in his most important battle. His on-going effort to help his cousin Genelle Shanor and her search for a kidney donor. Joe has been a major player I helping Genelle’s cause since she was first diagnosed with kidney failure in 1998.
Prior to his trip to Vegas Jo, Genelle and her physician, Doctor Pankiwich (of Buffalo General Hospital) appeared on the channel 7 program Western New York Live, to discuss the latest details of Genelle’s case. Jack Mesi said, "It was a very (good) informational show that discussed Genelle and her specific problems and the medical science part of transplanting. The show also discussed the importance of donating (other) organs and kidneys. Specifically kidneys right now for Genelle."
Jack was told that potential donors for Genelle were still being screened as they have to meet a variety of matches that include blood and enzymes.
Team Mesi is also one month into the foundation they launched in Genelle’s honor. "The "Baby" Joe Mesi Fight for Organ Donation." The aim of the foundation is to not only help Genelle, but also to raise awareness of the importance of organ donating and just how easy it is. It’s just a matter of filling out the back of your driver’s license. Jack added, "Joe and Genelle were pretty much raised together. She’s the closest thing he has to a sister. He gets his inspiration from her. Joe had said more than once that Genelle is the toughest in the family."
