By Dave Ricci
April 23, 2003
In recent weeks most Western New York hockey fans have had their attention focused on the Frozen Four. Lost among the frenzy of the Frozen Four and the crowning of the national champions was Western New Yorks connection to a minor league hockey championship.
Town of Tonawanda native and former Buffalo State Bengal standout, Todd Nowicki helped the Orlando Seals capture the Atlantic Coast Hockey Leagues Presidents Cup.
The Seals swept through the playoffs with six straight wins en route to the championship. They dispatched the Macon Trax in the opening round by scores of 3-2 (OT), 4-3 and 2-0 then moved on to defeat Knoxville 2-1, 3-1 and 8-1.
The rookie Nowicki posted six points (3 goals, 3 assists) in the playoffs and 48 points (25 goals, 23 assist) in 44 regular season games. His plus-25 ranking was second overall in the ACHL.
In mid April, Seals owner, David Waronker announced that he was moving the Seals and his other three ACHL franchises-Jacksonville, Macon and Miami-to the World Hockey Association 2.
The WHA 2 is a new developmental league for the World Hockey Association.
