Kenmore West 8 Niagara Falls 1

By Dave Ricci
A four-run explosion in the third inning led the Kenmore West Blue Devils to an 8-1 romp over the Niagara Falls Wolverines on Friday May 9. Ken-West, the defending New York State champions now take over soul possession of first place in the Niagara Frontier League with an 8-0 record.
The Falls slip to 7-1 in the NFL 10-4 overall.
Shortstop Jamie Gerace had a single, two triples, two runs scored and two RBI in K-W’s nine hit onslaught. Gerace also reached base on an error and stole a base.
The game revolved around the pitching match up of K-W’s Christine Keleher and N-F’s Brianna Hout, two of the premier hurlers in Western New York.
When the dust cleared Keleher was the decisive winner as she went the distance fanning 10 Wolverine batters without issuing a single walk.
The Wolverines lone run came in the fourth inning and was unearned.
Keleher faced two batters over the minimum allowing only two hits on the day. Blue Devils head coach Matt Chimera said, “Christine threw a great game. When she gets ahead in the count like that she’s very tough to beat. I think this was the best game she threw for us all year.”
Lisa Lauden and Jamie Gerace both singled in the third and were advanced to second (Lauden) and third (Gerace) on a Laurie Hutten ground out.
West loaded the bases when Brianna Hout issued a walk to Keleher. Eileen Mayfield pinch-ran for Keleher. K-W’s Amanda Webster made contact with her check-swing and sent the ball sailing to the edge of the infield, just beyond the reach of Falls’ second baseman Kim Hess.
Lauden and Gerace scored while Falls’ right fielder Jackie Loncto scooped up the ball and threw it wildly towards third base. By the time Falls’ settled the play down Mayfield was at third while Webster was on second.
Left fielder Jamie Otto was the next batter and she cranked a Hout offering into deep right field for a two RBI triple giving West a 4-0 lead.
The game was pretty much in the bag for K-W after they took their four-run lead. The Falls’ players became noticeably unnerved as they felt the game beginning to slip away.
Sue Henseler made it 5-1 K-W in the fifth when she launched a triple and came home on an over throw. The Blue Devils (12-2 overall) tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Jamie Gerace’s triple to straight-away center knocked in Lisa Lauden and Lauren Licata. The final run of the day came when Laurie Hutten’s singled. Gerace was caught in a run down between Falls’ catcher Casey Kestersoa and third baseman Katie Moody.
Kestersoa backed Gerace towards third with a throw to Moody who dropped the ball. Gerace headed home and narrowly avoided the tag to score.
Eileen Mayfield had two runs scored pinch running. Lisa Lauden picked up a hit and scored twice. Otto and Webster also had two RBI days. West’s Sarah Silvestri made a sweet catch in right field to rob Jackie Loncto of base hit in the third inning.
