As we pass the five-year anniversary of 9-11, I reflect
on that surreal day.
On September 8th I participated in a bodybuilding
show in NYC, which was held near the World Trade Center. After the show,
I spent a few days at my sister Nancy’s apartment, which was nearby.
My plan was to come home on Wednesday September 12. On September 7th
while looking for somewhere to have dinner, I got lost and ended up
at the WTC. I stopped at the fire station near the WTC and asked for
direction and went on my way. That would be the last time I would ever
see the Twin Towers.
On my last full day in NYC I was going to spend the
morning of September 11th at the WTC shopping and having breakfast.
Fortunately that was not to be. I didn’t wake up on time and decided
to abandon that plan for more sleep.
My sister and I were woken up by a phone call from
a friend who assumed that a plane accidentally hit the towers. Within
a few minutes I, along with thousands of people who were watching everything
unravel, was in a state of shock. Most people were jockeying between
watching the towers and watching their TV.
As I looked on, one tower just collapsed, and then
shortly after, the other suffered the same fate.
In one way, I remember it like it was yesterday, yet
at the same time, parts of that morning are hazy.
During the six days of sirens and constant fear that
followed the collapsing of the towers, I wondered if there would be
more attacks or if I would even make it back home.
Six days later, I took a train home (I was too afraid
to fly).
When we put together our October 2001 issue, we started
putting the American Flag on our covers. The Flag stands for freedom;
freedoms that we often take for granted. One of the freedoms we enjoy
is freedom of speech …and that privilege provides me the opportunity
to publish this paper.
I hope the men from the fire station where I asked
directions made it out alive to enjoy thier freedoms.
